my father once told me,
not to flinch when he hit me !
“William Macnair… always disappointed in his only child, no matter what I did. I swore to become a better man than he was but I’m not certain I succeeded.”
“My Mother, Jezebel. Our relationship was not perfect, but… I wish she had not died, on occasion.”
“Taking a walk through Knockturn Alley, and of course our intentions weren’t exactly honorable. This was shortly after I took the Mark… undoubtedly the worst mistake of my life to date.”
“Confiding in me her true delight in finding out she was going to have a grandson. I don’t think she had been happier in years.”
“Gracing Julianne and myself with his presence, I was a little surprised at how much his age started showing. Logically, of course, he was getting older… but in my mind he had always been younger, more threatening.”
“You can’t tell from this picture, but she had been crying earlier that day, yet again a victim of her oh so loving husband’s displeasure. I felt bad that I hadn’t been home to stop it, so I was just trying to cheer her up.”
my friends would laugh if you fell,
and then they would trip you again !
“Myself, in what almost seems a past life. Taken on my eighteenth birthday, by Julianne, right before we left to meet up with the boys to celebrate.”
“Maxwell, the closest thing I had to family while growing up. I believe we were having a serious discussion.”
“Rodolphus and I in Hogsmeade during our last year at school, just enjoying a calm evening.”
“And finally, Evan- together the four of us seemed invincible… as long as we had each other, nothing was too terrible. Or so we were convinced.”
“Lucius, the drama queen. I’m sure every group of friends has a Lucius- we were fortunate enough to have the original.”
“Evan’s slightly younger sister, Angelica. She was the first of the Slytherin Royals to fall from grace.”
“And Rodolphus’ younger brother, Rabastan, most likely at some formal gathering.”
“At a Quidditch game, Evan took the picture while Max was nowhere to be seen. Britannia was apparently demanding his attention that day.”
*bright laugh* “As my best friend, Max was capable of getting away with things that most others could not. He took a fancy to flipping my mattress to the floor in the dorms when I refused to get up and entertain him.”
“A vacation spent in Germany with the Avery family.”
“On a break from mindless Ministry work, just goofing off for a few minutes before returning to reality.”
“It’s the simple moments in life that are worth remembering- Evan and I, just talking outside of school.”
“Being ordered around by Narcissa… oh, I tried not to laugh, but I couldn’t help myself!”
“I can’t quite recall where we were but Angelica was trying to convince Evan to go swimming and he wasn’t having it.” *chuckles*
“After a ‘talk’ with his Father, we were trying to cheer him up.”
“Max took the picture before he took the remaining seat- I believe we were just trying to stay warm in the Common Room!”
“Striking a pose for an old friend, Elizabeth. She came to visit me at home and happened across my camera.”
“Another trip to Germany, during the Christmas holidays.”
“And speaking of bad moods! Getting yelled at by an old teacher for only God knows what.”
“The day Evan learned of his engagement to Glorianna… it wasn’t fun.”
“Lucius and Narcissa’s wedding day. I nearly missed it because of certain services I had to perform for the Dark Lord… but I made it just in time.”
“At the Rosiers’ annual Christmas party, amid all the fake smiles I did manage to pull a genuine laugh from Angie… though how, I do not remember.”
“A trip to Muggle London, if I’m not mistaken- Rabastan insisted on it.”
“Lucius managed to get us into some trouble, rather unsurprising, but as a loyal friend I didn’t have the heart to abandon him. Well- that, and I also happened to like trouble.” *laughs*
kids are responsible for many joys,
and are to blame for early deaths !
“Terence Avery, Maxwell’s oldest son and my favorite nephew, according to the persistent young man! No- there’s no blood relation but Maxwell is like a brother to me and I have always been ‘Uncle’ to the children. I love them all as if they were my own.”
*chuckles* “Callista, appealing to her Uncle at some formal gathering that her Mother decided it would be appropriate for her to carry around that ridiculous umbrella all day. And well- I couldn’t resist that face, so I broke it and let her run and play with her siblings.”
“Deidre has always been the most energetic one of the bunch… here she’s lighting up my Estate with her bright laughter. It was much needed after all I had recently gone through.”
“Maverick, the youngest. Maxwell is truly fortunate to have four wonderful kids in his life. I’m happy for him and I’m also glad I can be a part of their lives.”
“I believe Terence was six, and Maverick was three. The girls went shopping with their Mother as Max and I watched over the boys playing in the water. It was a good day for everyone.”
“Deidre is the dancer- even at such a young age she was quite good, and apparently Callista thought so as well.”
*smiles* “Terence and Callista- I couldn’t help but take a picture of them together.”
falling hopelessly in love,
i'm afraid the joke's on you !
“The happiest moment of my life up to that point- the night I married Julianne.”
“Wearing our House colors…” *faint smile* “Green undeniably looked good on her, hm?”
“It was hardly raining- I swear only a couple of drops fell from the sky- but she would be damned if she got wet. I was teasing her that she was afraid she would melt.”
“Julianne was a passionate pianist, and rather protective of her piano. That was the look she always wore whenever I dared to strike a few keys, as a clear warning.”
“Three months pregnant with our baby boy, and not thrilled to be getting ‘fat’, I planned an evening just for us so that I could remind her just how beautiful she was, and that I loved her.”
“A year younger than I, it wasn’t often that we talked before our engagement was announced. This would be one of those rare occasions we just happened to be with the same group of people.”
“I’m the first to admit that I’m easily annoyed. And well- listening at a couple of men calling out what they must consider to be compliments to MY wife certainly isn’t good for anyone’s health.”
“Growing a little impatient as I talked with Max, Rod, and Evan while we were supposed to be on a ‘shopping trip’. Be sure Britannia was also there, just as annoyed with her own husband for not paying attention.”
*sighs* “Early into her pregnancy, Julianne fell absolutely in love with a puppy in a pet shop, and here she is pouting at me because I didn’t want a dog. She begged me to let her have it for months. Her birthday was just a few weeks after the day she was killed… guess what her present was going to be?”
“A day my parents decided to visit us at our new home- note the look of absolute boredom that she no doubt got from me.”
“I could always count on her to dress bright and colorful… her presence alone could lift whatever mood I was in.”
“Just a couple of months away from having our baby. She forced me to buy her that giant coat to hide her stomach… I believe Max was teasing her about it, and so of course her reaction was to stick out her tongue.” *faint smile*
“I was happiest when I was with her- anybody could see that. Without her in my life there’s a hole that seems impossible to fill.”

standing in front of the mirror,
even i can't look at me !
“I believe I was trying to convince Deidre to stop making excuses to stay up and go to sleep. I can terrify grown men into doing what I say but I can’t reason with a young girl. Go fucking figure.”
“Before Voldemort’s return… there’s a notable hint of genuine calm around me that I can only hope to fake these days.”
“Last winter… Max and I were hiding from the children and their snowballs! Of course, we couldn’t hide for long, and soon enough the attack continued.”
“After a recent mission gone awry, I was hurt. Rodolphus came by to make sure I would be alright.”
“Deep in thought? That would be nice… but alas, no- my charming favorite nephew claimed I was old, so I spent a good while pointedly ignoring him, much to his frustration.” *chuckles*
“I often drink alone these days but here’s proof that I can be convinced otherwise.”
*laughs* “Fooling around with Max and the children a few summers ago, in Muggle London. The girls were all for me buying it but Max insisted that I would end up killing myself and pretty much forbid it. He’s lucky I listen to him… on occasion.”
“Taking a lunch break from the Ministry, I believe. I’m sure it was well needed or I most likely wouldn’t have left!”
“Ahh… Julianne’s birthday, last year. I visited her grave as I always do. When I returned home, it wasn't long before the urge to drink too much hit me.”
“Meeting Rod for a mission, and wearing one of his old infamous sweaters. I’ve had it for so long I had forgotten it was his until he started whining about it!”
when there's no-one left to blame,
it's always the ones closest to you !
“Enjoying a chat with my best friend and brother. He’s smiling so my guess is that it wasn’t work-related.”
“Oh dear… I had ALMOST mistaken him for Terence, at a quick glance. Well- perhaps he should have listened when I suggested to get his hair cut!”
“Taken at the Ministry- I believe during a summer break, and the kids pulled us away from work.”
*chuckles* “One of those days both Max and Rod could visit me- we could all finally take a breath and just relax.”
“A few nights before Voldemort’s return. Both of us could feel it was getting ready to happen- our Marks were getting darker and darker.”
*dies laughing* “OK- brother? You forgot to put down a finger.”
“Ahh… trying to explain to Callista and Deidre why I suddenly couldn’t pick them up and have them spend the night at my Estate. I’m not certain what he told them but the truth was that I had an unfortunate incident with a couple of Aurors and was in no condition to entertain them.”
“Hmm… I thought my camera was broke, so Max reached out for it to check for himself, but then the flash went off in his face. It was a completely random moment but undeniably amusing at the same time.”
“Vacation in Germany, a peaceful moment between just the two of us while the children and their Mother were shopping.”
*smiles* “I’m very lucky to have Max- I could not ask for a better best friend.”
“When the three of us are working together it seems things will go according to plan. There’s no-one else I trust near as much as Max and Rod.”
“Rodolphus- a very close friend that I’m glad to welcome back into my life. The last fifteen years without him hadn’t been the same… but I always thought of him, with the hope that he would be alright in the end.”
“I was only slightly disappointed to discover his lack of interest in growing his hair back out. Now I can’t rightfully call him a woman anymore.”
“One of those rare, nice days he could come and visit me. We were just reminiscing a little- only about safe topics, of course!”
“After a mission- neither of us was entirely happy that day but we still managed to do what we had to.”
*chuckles* “Wearing his Father’s old, and very unique, clothes. Teasing him about them was absolutely necessary, no matter what he says!”
“In a Muggle neighborhood, doing some more work for our Lord. We figured it was safe enough for him to walk around, but still we were extremely careful.”
“Don’t beg, old friend. Here I thought you had more dignity than that…” *winks*
“A moment of uncertainty after failing to retrieve the Prophecy… we all knew we were in trouble. We just didn’t know what it would cost us.”
“Pretending to be upset at me! He should know by now I’m immune to pouting, unless of course you ask my nieces.”
*smiles* “Just talking and being ourselves. I don’t ask for much out of life these days- I’m just grateful for the few good times I’m spared.”
a memory can last a lifetime,
but so can pain and misery !
*sighs* “Lucius… sometimes I don’t have very much patience for the man, but he’s always been a friend nonetheless. What’s happened to his family due to his mistakes isn’t to be taken lightly. I truly feel sorry for them, and hope Lucius gets out of prison soon.”
“A trip to Malfoy Manor, and this is how I discover the head of the family. In truth I hadn’t been surprised… same old Lucius.”
“With his son, Draco. Lucius doesn’t like to be teased in front of others- thus the look he was giving me!”
“A Death Eater meeting at Malfoy Manor… not many people can look at home in a room with Voldemort, but Bellatrix is certainly an exception, don’t you think?”
“Max’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Britannia. It’s no secret between he and I that I was never extremely fond of her… but he loved her, and he loves her still, so I kept most of my comments to myself- which I’ll continue to do.”
“Taken not long ago, while she still pretended to be loyal in her marriage.”
“Holding Maverick…” *chuckles* “He had been crying, refusing to be shushed by his Mother, but then seemed to be just fine when I walked into the room and called for his attention.”
watching them grow i realize,
i'm not getting any younger here !
*smiles* “Terence, laughing and having a good time with Max and, of course, myself. He’s still young but I’m proud of the man he is becoming.”
“A little last minute shopping for his Mother’s birthday. Britannia seemed to accept that we were simply running a little late, and didn’t just forget about it.”
“Formal gatherings when I was young had always been torture, but Max’s children have more freedom than we did. Still bored, I don’t doubt, but at least managing to find some entertainment.”
“The day after I returned home from my mission with the Giants, in the mountains. The children hadn’t known why I suddenly left for such a long time, but I was hardly surprised to receive a visit from my favorite nephew the second he heard I was back.”
“Taken a year or so ago… I was not very healthy due to some bad decisions on my part, but still tried to seem alright when Terence appeared. I don’t believe he entirely bought my explanation, thus the doubting, worried expression on his face.”
“The beautiful Callista, pouting at her Uncle until I agreed to cancel my meeting with my lawyers later that evening and spend the time with her instead. She had been upset and came seeking reassurances, which I didn’t have a problem to give her.”
“Last summer, just talking at my Estate. It was a rather pleasant evening.”
“A few years ago, when she and Terence were at a stage that prompted them to use only sarcasm with each other. I tried to explain it was perfectly normal when she confided in me that she didn’t enjoy it.”
“I sometimes forget how grown up she is… asking me if I thought she looked alright for a date she had. No- I didn’t like the circumstances but be sure she knew she looked beautiful.”
“Last Christmas, I spent the holiday with the Avery family as usual. Callista was most unimpressed when I refused to reveal her presents until about an hour after everyone else got theirs.” *laughs*
“I believe by the time Britannia was pregnant for a third time, Terence really wanted a little brother. However not a single person could be disappointed to have Deidre around- the sweet girl constantly bringing joy to our lives.”
“Happy birthday to her? Indeed it was. Though she grows older, it’s always comforting to watch her react with childish excitement to such simple things as presents.”
“Deidre and Callista invaded the Ministry, burst into my office without so much as knocking, and announced that I was taking them shopping. I had never seen such priceless expressions on the faces of my colleagues, who had decided to have a meeting in my office at the time. And what other choice did I have but to end the meeting on the spot and go with them?”
“Coming to me after a fight with her Mother. I spent a good while cheering her up, and by the end of the night had to send a message to Max, informing him that she had fallen asleep at my house so he wouldn’t worry.”
*sighs* “Apparently my overprotective nature is amusing. All I did was glare at some idiotic young boy that dared to comment on Deidre’s dress in front of me. Why can’t she stay a little girl forever?”
“Maverick, complaining to me about the clothes Britannia insisted he wear. He’s the youngest in the family but already he’s well on his way to becoming a man. I almost feel old…”
*chuckles* “I’ve teased Max about his long hair for years, so it only makes sense that I would also tease Terence and Maverick.”
“Visiting me at home, and telling me all about the events taking place in his life at the time. Most people would be shocked to learn that I’m glad to listen to whatever any of the children have to say.”
“Playing pool at the Avery household with the boys while the girls were out with their Mother.”
*chuckles* “We were supposed to be shopping for school supplies, but Maverick only cared about buying some ice-cream. His thoughts were then parroted by the rest, and before I knew it, school supplies didn’t seem as important as they had before.”
