Salem Institute of Magic
"Never keep your wand in your back pocket."
Peace has reigned in the American Wizarding world for years, ever since the defeat of their power-hungry Minister sixty years ago. Life has been worry-free since then, the only troubles involving mundane concerns like child-raising, homework, bad weather, and the like.
But now, just as the 2010 school year is about to begin, that fearlessness is being shattered. Recently found was an odd item, a bracelet with Dark magical properties. A little girl was found in possession of it after she murdered her entire family in cold blood. It was confiscated, of course, and analyzed... and the authorities immediately tried to destroy it. Tried. Nothing could harm its invincible surface. So it was locked away in the depths of the Department of Mysteries.
Little does the population know that there's more than one of these Dark objects and that they contain the souls of the Dark Coven.
Before even Herpo the Foul had figured out how to achieve immortality, a group of Dark witches and wizards bent on eternal life had come up with a way to impart a piece of their souls into other objects. They were a completely unknown group, keeping their motives and practices secret from everyone lest they be stopped and imprisoned. The number in the group is still unknown, but there were several of them, each attempting to create one horcrux. Unfortunately for them, their experiment went awry. None of them managed to survive the process, losing control of the evil magic they were trying to utilize.
Their horcruxes disappeared after that. Some have been lost, others have been adopted as family heirlooms, and who knows what happened to the others. But one thing is for certain: they are very dangerous. The horcrux is an interesting object; the soul contained inside of it would slowly leech into the bearer and be able to possess them.
As for the Dark Coven itself, its members are still out there... in some form. Most likely they are lingering as bodiless phantoms, waiting for any chance to come back to life.
