Special Abilities
:: Animagus::
A method of transfiguration. A witch or wizard who can transform into the shape of a particular animal while retaining his| her mental faculties (brain and thoughts of their human selves). This is a highly advanced stage of transfiguration and so it is made clear in the novels that Animagi are rare in the wizarding world.
The physical condition of the Animagus will be seen in their animal shape. For example, if the person is injured, then the animal is injured. If the human is wearing clothes before he|she transfigures, then the clothes will be seen again when they return to human form. It is not fully known how this is, but an Animagus has no need to fear of transforming back to human form with no clothing.
Animagi have the ability to hold limited communication with other true animals. It must be noted that this is through body language and perhaps some limited communication. An Animagus is not "Dr. Dolittle"! All Animagi are registered with the Ministry of Magic. If you are an registered Animagus, then everyone in the wizarding world will most likely know about it. The penalties for being an unregistered animagus are high indeed (though the marauders were unregistered!). A Werewolf is not an Animagus.
:: Legilimency ::
Although the name is the latin for mind reader, it must be pointed out so we are none of us straying into Mary Sue territory if this is chosen as a special ability. Legilimency is not mind reading or psychic ability. You cannot be born a Legilimens and it takes years and years of training and learning. Albus Dumbledore is over eighty years old and is regarded as a skilled Legilimens. But think of the years behind him! Severus Snape as a professor in his thirties is a skilled Legilimens, but again, he has years of training behind him.
It is not taught at Hogwarts. It is the ability to extract memories and emotions from another person. Eye contact is usually essential and close contact with the person also preferable. There is also a chance that it is a restricted art, though in times like this (first wizarding war), restrictions are probably not adhered to that much.
:: Occlumency ::
The art of defending the mind against penetration & effectively against Legilimency. It involves clearing the mind of emotion and thoughts that might reveal memories with emotional ties to the person seeking information. Occlumency was probably taught sometimes at Hogwarts in this era as a defensive area (DADA). Again, it is difficult to master and takes years of training to become very skilled in the area.
:: Parselmouth::
Parseltongue is the language of the snakes and is associated with Salazar Slytherin, founder of Slytherin House. The ability to speak Parseltongue is very rare indeed and those who can are called Parselmouths. It sounds like the person is hissing without needing to take a breath while doing so.
:: Metamorphagus::
Nymphadora Tonks was a metamorphagus. Neither of her parents was one, so it was just fate really. They are extremely rare and there have been no others recorded in the books. They can change their appearance at will. No applications for this allowed (one reason: too confusing for PB’s!).
Being a Vampire isn’t an Special Ability. Nor is being a Werewolf.
